context & objective
In 1219, Francis of Assisi and Sultan al-Malik al-Kamil met in Damietta, Egypt, for a famous dialogue much desired by the saint. It was the beginning of the Franciscan presence in the Egyptian area; presence that continues today, in various cities of the state.
Since 2011, Pro Terra Sancta has supported the Franciscan friars in their Musky convent in Cairo, Egypt’s capital. The neighborhood in which the Association operates is one of the city’s poorest, and inhabitants are offered a variety of services ranging from the purchase of medicines and food to rent subsidies. Pro Terra Sancta also covers part of the costs associated with some children’s schooling. In the year 2020, 90 families with a total of 280 children received support. Last year, the medicine distribution program touched 450 patients.
