Cyprus, aid to the Catholic community

Our goal is to support the Christian community, especially its poorest members, the island of Cyprus.

Not everyone knows that the Franciscans of the Custody of the Holy Land have also been present in Cyprus since the thirteenth century, where they have encountered difficult events up to the present day (CLICK HERE to learn more).

The troubled situation in Cyprus has yet to change: barbed wire, walls, barriers and a buffer zone manned by UN soldiers separate the Republic of Cyprus from the remaining territory in the northern part of the island, which has been controlled by Turkey since 1974. A division which, along with taking a heavy toll on the local population, severely affects the immense Christian cultural heritage in the occupied northern area.

A past to be protected, a present to support

A land of the apostles and an important point of passage for St. Francis, Cyprus is now a country rich in thousand-year old archeological ruins, ancient Byzantine churches and monasteries, and amazing medieval Gothic cathedrals. But it is also a country where the Franciscan presence is critical to curbing poverty and neglect.

Placement and Activities of Custody of the Holy Land in Cyprus

  • Nicosia

We support the Social Center of St Joseph the Migrant, a center sun by the Franciscan sisters of Sacred Heart that offers assistance and training to foreign immigrants. We support the Terra Sancta College too, the island’s oldest school, that is in desperate need of re-structural.

  • Limassol

We support the Saint Francis Refuge, that offers health care to the poor and organizes recreation activities. Moreover, the brotherhood of Limassol support the sisters of Sacred Heart who run the St Mary school. This school is one of the most sought after, offering an extremely high level of education. Several families receive contributions towards payment of tuition fees, albeit sometimes modest amounts.

  • Larnaca

We support the Holy Land Rest House, a house for the elderly sustained by the Custody of the Holy Land in collaboration with the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart Santa Maria delle Grazie.

Become a Sponsor for Cyprus

The social and pastoral work of the Franciscans is supported solely by the charity of many small donors. For this reason, every little gesture of support counts!

“Above all else, it is a holy land, intertwining its people, religions and cultures. It is a country that has suffered terrible pillages from ancient peoples.” Pierbattista Pizzaballa – Custos of the Holy Land
