Bethlehem and the children of the Holy Land

He became a child, so that the Word could be grasped by us. In this way God teaches us to love the little ones. In this way he teaches us to love the weak. In this way he teaches us respect for children. The Child of Bethlehem directs our gaze towards all, particularly towards children who suffer and are abused in the world, the born and the unborn”.  Pope Benedict XVI

This project aims to promote the personal and social growth of needy children and young people in Bethlehem.

The intricate political and economic situation in the Holy Land strikes hard at the many children and adolescents who do not receive an adequate education in Bethlehem. Many pupils in Bethlehem have troubles at school due to violent and extremely difficult family situations – parents have no income and are burdened with serious problems.

Our activities

Our activities support the Catholic parish and the Custody’s schools in Bethlehem, in their pastoral and social duty to the children and young people. The Franciscan Social Service Office verify case-by-case the true necessity of families and point out the neediest ones. The project is focused on two most critical aspects:

  • Education. We offer scholarships that cover the scholar fees of the neediest students at Terra Sancta College, we support minors with learning difficulties and disabled children and we arrange seminars about the domestic violence prevention
  • Health emergency. We provide financial aid for medical care for children whose families are unable to bear health related costs and we organize preventive and health promotion activities

The schools of the Custody of the Holy Land and the Parish of Saint Catherine of Bethlehem collaborate with us.

The dream we wish to turn into reality

With the project “Bethlehem and the children of the Holy Land” we want to support the most fragile ones in their most basic needs – education and health -, in this very special part of the Holy Land where God himself became a child.
