Jericho: Aid for Christians in need

Our objective is to aid  the Church of the Good Shepherd, the Franciscan parish in Jericho, in its effort to manage the the emergency situation in that town. In this way, ATS supports the Christian community in Jericho.

Jericho is an oasis in the desert, known above all for the miracles that Jesus performed there. The community which lives there is the smallest in the Palestinian territories, and among the most generous in the Middle East. The Christian families in this city must deal with a particularly difficult situation caused by the high unemployment rate and the lack of basic public services.

Our Activities in Jericho

For centuries, the Franciscan friars in Jericho have served local families in need, not only as a spiritual leaders, but also with concrete support in the following ways:

  • The Franciscan friars care for the elderly who live alone and often cannot afford medical care;
  • The Franciscan parish in Jericho supports the poorest families in their hour of greatest need, when even daily expenses become a challenge;
  • The Franciscan friars run several schools and educational initiatives, with the goal of guaranteeing a quality education, within a secure and inclusive place, for all children.

How to Support Jericho

The support provided by the Franciscan friars to the Catholic minority in Jericho is vital for assuring the Christian presence of this very unique part of the Holy Land.

“We ask for two graces: To patiently endure, and to overcome, oppression, external and internal, with love … To endure means to not let ourselves be overcome by difficulties. The Christian has the strength not lower their arms, but to carry on, to endure.” Pope Francis
