The Middle East Community program: speaking the participants to the first edition which has just ended

The first edition of the Middle East Community Program has just ended with great success. The program which is for university students from abroad, offers an opportunity to get depth training on the Middle East.

Six students, coming from various Universities, experienced three intense weeks made up with lessons, field trips and, above all, characterized by many important encounters.  At the end of the program we asked them their personal impressions about the program.

“To put it blunlty, they have been three unforgettable weeks – says Mario. “I still have a fresh imprinted image of the living stones in the areas we visited: the people. Infact our trip was unique because of them first, and so was what we aknowleged, as they led us through their religion, their history and the political and cultural situation. We had the great opportunity to hear witnesses of those who live in this part of the Middle East and to meet the people working in various projects to build a concrete future despite the oppressing wall and the problems it causes as a result”.

“These three weeks were useful – says another participant – to meet unexpected realities, of which I couldn’t even imagine the existence. This helped me to open my mind and heart, setting aside my previous positions, which I had earned from my studies. We met relevant people which really struck me. I was impressed by the great knowledge they had of their history, but above all by their devotion to the place they live in and their courage”.

Based in Bethlehem, the students had the chance to meet many local realities, study centers, local universities and schools, and various associations and cooperatives working in the area. They then visited several field trips in order to try to understand the complex social and political situation, but also relishing the beauty of the historical and cultural sites: from Jerusalem to Hebron, from Nablus to Jericho, from Bethany to Sabastya, up to the north, to the Sea of Galilee, or on the shores of the Mediterranean sea, discovering Acco and the Golan Heights, to the borders of Syria and Lebanon.

Promoters of the program where the Association pro Terra Sancta together with the Catholic University of Milan, and with the support of Pro Terra Sancta Network and the Mosaic Centre Jericho.

The next edition of the Middle East Community Program will be held from 22nd of August to 10th of September 2016. Download the program here.
