Since 2017, Pro Terra Sancta has been supporting the city's only school for deaf children and young people in Aleppo, the École d'Habilitation et d'Initiation pour les sourds (EHIS), covering part of the management and maintenance costs.
The school is located near the Franciscan monastery of Er-Ram and has 55 students between the ages of 6 and 15. In EHIS, children have the opportunity to acquire a complete educationup to the eighth grade, according to the lines of the programs distributed by the Ministry of Education.
The school provides for lessons to be carried out by two teachers at the same time, one of whom uses Arabic-Levantine sign language. In 2020, after incurring the costs of updating the school to the health needs dictated by the pandemic situation, Pro Terra Sancta allowed 150 children and 24 teachers to take part in the lessons.
In the school, medical and health care is strong: regular psychological examinations and health checks are provided for children. For the families of the pupils, a periodic discussion desk is available with doctors and teachers, in order to jointly monitor the growth and development of the child.
