In the heart of Damascus, not far from Bab Touma, lies a neighborhood that holds a special place in Christian history. It is the Quarter of Saint Ananias – a place that speaks of encounter, welcome, and openness to others.
At the center of this neighborhood stands the Sanctuary of the House of Saint Ananias. A small underground crypt, reached by twenty-three steps, preserves the memory of the man chosen by God to baptize Saint Paul after his conversion. According to Eastern Christian tradition, Ananias was one of the seventy-two disciples mentioned in the Gospel of Luke and among those who came to Damascus after the martyrdom of Saint Stephen. He became the first bishop of Damascus and also its first martyr, giving his life while spreading the Gospel throughout Syria.
This holy place reminds us that Damascus was one of the first cradles of Christianity. It was here that Saul of Tarsus encountered Christ and became Paul the Apostle. It was here that the followers of Jesus were first called “Christians.” Yet this ancient city has also known deep suffering. Since the beginning of the Syrian conflict in 2011, Damascus and its people have endured years of violence, poverty, and uncertainty.
In response to this reality, Pro Terra Sancta has begun an important project to renew and restore the Quarter of Saint Ananias.
Our goal is not only to preserve stones and walls, but to rebuild a living community. By restoring these spaces, we wish to offer local families a dignified environment and to welcome pilgrims and visitors once again. Alongside the construction works, we organize artistic and cultural training programs, helping residents rediscover the value of their heritage and encouraging dialogue and friendship with all who come to visit.
Your support can help rebuild homes, restore the sanctuary, and strengthen the Christian presence in Damascus!
