context & objective
Thousands of displaced individuals have gathered in Damascus, Syria’s capital, since the country’s civil war started in 2011. Damascus, which was directly affected by the fighting and was largely damaged, is now paying a high price, particularly as a result of the sanctions imposed on Syria: unemployment is high, and the economy shows no signs of recovery.
Pro Terra Sancta is working to set up an emergency facility at the Bab Touma Franciscan convent in Damascus, also known as the Latin center. More than 700 families are served, with diapers, powdered milk, food, clothing, and hygiene supplies among the items distributed. A kindergarten, set up by Pro Terra Sancta at the memorial of San Paolo, welcomes around one hundred children with disabilities.
Particular attention is paid to the sick, especially due to the pandemic situation. The sick are given additional treatment, especially in light of the pandemic crisis. Pro Terra Sancta provided funds for medical treatment to 1200 persons, as well as vouchers for the purchase of pharmaceutical products. It has also supported in the treatment of patients with chronic diseases and oncological disorders.
