The Culture of encounter, in memory of St. Ananias and St. Paul

Syria/Damascus

CONTEXT & OBJECTIVE

For years violent fighting has been ongoing in Damascus, the capital city of Syria. Although the violent fighiting has ceased now, part of the suburbs are destroyed, its social fabric is divided and weakened and many Christians have left. In the past, however, Damascus was the one of the first meeting place for the Christian community, since a great event occured here: the conversion of St. Paul Apostle of the Gentiles.

Our commitment within the walls of the old city of Damascus aims at recovering and restoring old buildings linked to the Bab Touma parish, the sanctuary of Saint Ananias and other abandoned properties of the Franciscan friars of the Custody of the Holy Land. After the restoration we wish to start educational and cultural activities that could encourage meeting and dialogue between the different communities and increase the historical and artistic awareness of locals.
